With the fantasy hockey season winding down, managers in keeper leagues need to start considering players to bring over to the 2009-2010 season. This is the last segment in a multi-part series exploring keeper options at right wing for keeper leagues.
Alexei Kovalev | Ottawa Senators
Kovalev’s age may deter some from considering him in keeper leagues, but if we’ve learned anything from Kory, it’s not to overemphasize youth in keeper leagues. Regardless of his age, Kovalev is still a helluva sniper. There is a catch, however. If Dany Heatley sticks around in the nation’s capital, Kovalev’s fantasy value may take a hit as Ottawa is a 1 line team and sticking him with Foligno and Fisher won’t really boost his chances of hitting serious numbers. The Sens could very well run 4 forwards on the power play, but it’s still too early to see if that’s going to be the case this season. As of this very moment, Heatley is still a Senator. Until he departs, you may want to think twice about Kovalev.
Nikolai Zherdev | Free Agent
Earlier this summer, the New York Rangers opted not to re-sign winger Nikolai Zherdev, making him a free agent. Since then, there have been many reports of Zherdev heading to the KHL, but with nothing has come to fruition thus far. More recently, strong rumors have indicated that the Atlanta Thrashers are interested in Zherdev’s services. With nothing solidified in regards to Nik and with keeper drafts already taking place, it would be best to leave him alone at this point in time.
Mark Recchi | Boston Bruins
Despite an impressive 2008-2009 season with the Bruins and Lightning, the 41-year old winger is turning into a rental player and should be of no consideration in keeper leagues. Michael Ryder and Blake Wheeler should be ahead of Recchi his season in the depth charts and he should retiring here in the next couple of seasons.
Teemu Selanne | Anaheim Ducks
While Selanne has shown us he’s still a viable source for points, it’s a guessing game as to how he is going to approach his career at the end of this season. As a long term keeper option, it’s just not worth the risk of relying too heavily on Selanne at this point in his career. Treat him as a year-by-year player from here on out.
