Free Agent Fantasy Frenzy: Roloson, Clemmensen, Anderson and Khabibulin

TSN is reporting that Dwayne Roloson has signed with the New York Islanders. The deal is for 2 years at 2.5 million per year.

New York Islanders Fantasy Analysis:
We are all familiar with the uncertainties of Rick DiPietro’s health, so this could be a good signing for New York. We know Roloson is still able to hold his own as he played in more than 60 games last season for the Oilers. He has no keeper value whatsoever, but drafting him as a 3rd/4th option in net in the later rounds of the draft could prove to be trade bait mid-season if DP goes down again.

The Sun-Sentinel is reporting that Scott Clemmensen has signed with the Florida Panthers. The deal is for 3 years at 1.2 million per year.

Florida Panthers Fantasy Breakdown:
We have seen Vokoun falter in the past couple years and as a result, we saw the emergence of Craig Anderson. We already know Clemmensen’s ability, so if Vokoun goes cold, don’t expect there to be any hesitation to use Clemmensen. Treat him like Roloson and draft him in the later rounds as a 3rd option behind 2 rock solid goaltenders or a 4th option on a team of serviceable or questionable tenders.

TSN is reporting that Craig Anderson has signed with the Colorado Avalanche. The deal is for 2 years at 1.8 million per year.

Colorado Avalanche Fantasy Breakdown:
This could be a real sleeper pick for those drafting well before the season begins. Plain and simple: Peter Budaj is not the answer for the Avalanche and is certainly not the answer for fantasy hockey managers. Craig Anderson gave Tomas Vokoun a run for his money over the past 2 seasons and proved his worth as a decent flyer between the pipes. Now, as a potential starter, consider Anderson a 3rd option on fantasy teams who has a much bigger upside than most goaltenders that may be available in the middle rounds. He can certainly turn to trade bait if he really performs for the ‘Lanche.

TSN is reporting that Nikolai Khabibulin has signed with the Edmonton Oilers. The deal is for 4 years at 3.75 million per year.

Edmonton Oilers Fantasy Breakdown:
He’s the man in Edmonton, no ifs, ands or buts. Prior to 2008-2009, Khabibulin played in 50+ games in 6 straight seasons, so the durability is there. Certainly a top goaltender in year-to-year leagues, he’ll draw some attention in the first several rounds of any draft. Keeper leagues should throw some caution to the wind as when he finishes his 4 year stint, he’ll be 40 years of age, so make sure to have a prospect or a backup plan waiting in the shadows.
