Fantasy Hockey Dynasty League Basics

The Sauce loves to keep you informed on all aspects of fantasy hockey keeper leagues. Sometimes, however, keeper formats are just not enough for the most extreme fantasy hockey enthusiast. Managers looking for the final stage of their fantasy hockey experience may want to consider taking part in a fantasy hockey dynasty league.

What is a dynasty league?
A dynasty league is the ultimate fantasy hockey experience. Not only does it require year-to-year team management, but it requires the management of a “farm team” of prospects each manager drafts as well. There are many variations of dynasty leagues, however, a common format is to have a team (with maybe several keepers) and a farm team of 5-10 prospects that can be “called up” once they make their NHL debut.

What is needed for a league to be successful?
Like any successful fantasy hockey league, commitment is essential on every manager’s part. In the dynasty format, commitment is the lifeblood of the league. Each manager must devote some serious time to scouting and team management in order to make the league enjoyable for all. League commissioners should consider recruiting only the most serious managers to play as casual players may not be willing to put in the effort needed to have the league run smoothly.

What are the benefits of participating in a dynasty league?
Dynasty leagues require some serious minor league (and even overseas) scouting. Using resources to uncover the next big phenom allows for the participating managers to apply scouting techniques to other fantasy sports. Also, sifting through rookies and prospects certainly has its advantages in year-to-year leagues, especially in the later rounds of a deep draft. Lastly, it teaches patience and timing in fantasy hockey like no other fantasy format.

What are some resources for participating in a dynasty league?
Check out the following websites to get a nice start on scouting for dynasty league formats, as well as other dynasty resources:
Hockey’s Future: Excellent website for uncovering prospects for every team
Forecaster Hockey: Another resource for prospects

Managers considering taking the commissioner role in a dynasty league should realize there are very few services that cater to dynasty leagues, so a lot of the organization must be done independently. Keeping track of manager’s rosters in the off-season may require a personal website or forum for the best results.

The most important thing is to have fun with a dynasty league. Commissioners that can get a solid group of managers together will find the experience well worth the time.
