Left Winger Draft Busts of 08-09

Alexander Frolov: Frolov has had high expectations placed on him by fantasy managers for the past several years but just has not reached that elite level quite yet. It’s questionable if he ever truly will. He was only able to get 59 points, a decline from 2007-2008’s 67, which was also itself a decline from the 71 in 2006-2007. Frolov did notch 59 points, which is not that shabby, but whether he’s a true fantasy draft bust or not, really will depend on where he was drafted initially, which is potentially in the first few rounds.

Paul Kariya: Old fantasy hockey stud Paul Kariya had 15 points in only 11 games played but he also missed the rest of the season after those first 11. Those that drafted Kariya got pretty much screwed over. Hopefully the veteran Kariya can come back strong on an emerging St. Louis Blues team with a good youth movement in 2009-2010.

Andrei Kostitsyn: AK46 had a pretty nice season last year with 53 points but slid in his development with a 12 drop in production and a huge swing of -22. He did grab more PIMs but it is highly unlikely that people grabbed him in the draft for PIMs. A disappointing year for those that drafted him for sure, as most were probably hoping he could have an extremely strong follow-up season on a seemingly strong Habs team.

Brian Rolston: After leaving the conservative and defense-first system of the Minnesota Wild, where Rolston was still able to post back-to-back 31 goal seasons before he left for NJ, a lot of managers were hoping Rolston would be able to let loose a bit more with his old team. The Devils play a surprisingly up tempo game nowadays, with some skilled young guys like Parise and Zajac. For Rolston, though, his season was a disappointment, where he was only able to score 32 points. That’s just one more point than he had goals with Minny the years before. He is getting a bit older now, so perhaps it would be best to leave him to be drafted by some other manager next season.

Wojtek Wolski: Wolski has been expected to break out for probably the past 3 straight years now but it has not happened yet. Wolski is still a young guy, so give it time, but for 2008-2009, he did not deliver when he was needed. With big guns Stastny and Sakic out for extended stretches, managers hoped Wolski, along with teammates Smyth and Hejduk would pick up their game and raise it to the next level but it didn’t happen. Wolski’s point total went down by 6 and his +/- rating went way down from a +10 in 07-08 to -13.

Alex Tanguay: Tanguay had an 81 point season in Calgary just a couple seasons ago but then took a big hit in production in 07-08, dropping to only 58 points. His move to Montreal raised optimism concerning his fantasy status as a potential first LWer but his stock has taken a hit lately. He only played 50 games and did grab 41 points, which would be pro-rated to about 67 points in a full season, but many were hoping he could get back up to point-per-game levels he had in his last two seasons with Colorado and his first with Calgary. Expect Tanguay to have a better showing next season.
