Top Tier Goaltenders for Keeper Leagues in the 2009-2010 Fantasy Hockey Season

With the fantasy hockey season winding down, managers in keeper leagues need to start considering players to bring over to the 2009-2010 season. This is the first segment in a 5 part series exploring keeper options in regards to goaltenders.

Once we have finished with goaltenders, we will explore all forward positions, as well as defensive positions from top to bottom, so continue to check back for all your keeper inquiries.

Top Tier Keeper Goaltenders

Miikka Kiprusoff | Calgary Flames
Kippers continues to be a workhorse for the Flames and should assume that role again next season. McElhinney is a RFA this summer, so whether management brings in a backup who can take some of the load off of Kiprusoff won’t be addressed until July at the very earliest. Regardless, he should see 60+ starts again next season. A solid fantasy option in all formats.

Evgeni Nabokov | San Jose Sharks
Nabby has been dynamite for the Sharks this season and is certainly a top 5 goaltender in any fantasy format next season. Brian Boucher is a UFA at the end of this season, so we’ll find out early this summer if the Sharks look to take some of the workload off of Nabokov by bringing in a comparable goaltender but regardless of what happens, look for 60+ out of him next season as well.

Niklas Backstrom | Minnesota Wild
Backstrom has quietly put in a solid season and has been locked up long term in Minnesota and with the numbers that he has displayed this season, he should be of top consideration between the pipes for keeper managers. The Wild will certainly need to beef up their offensive output heading into 2009-2010 but if they are successful, it could easily be a 40 win season for Backstrom.

Roberto Luongo | Vancouver Canucks
Managers who were patient with Luongo this season are seeing it pay dividends right now as Luongo is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL over the past month. 2009-2010 will be his last with the Canucks under his current contract so having him next season on any fantasy team could be beneficial as he should be playing his best hockey if he wants to get paid in Vancouver (or elsewhere).

Henrik Lundqvist | New York Rangers
Lundy is still a top option long term between the pipes despite the yearly inconsistent play from the team around him. Despite having a fairly normal season between the pipes this year, it shouldn’t deter managers from bringing him over to next season. He still has rock solid numbers in an unfriendly fantasy environment which makes one believe that if the Rangers can solidify themselves over the next couple of seasons, Lundy could finally be a 40+ game winner.

Martin Brodeur | New Jersey Devils
Don’t worry about his age. Martin Brodeur is a workhorse betwen the pipes and certainly should be brought over to next season for managers in keeper leagues. Scott Clemmensen could prove to be a worthy backup to give Brodie a little rest next season so he isn’t counted on to start 70+ games. Look for 60-70 starts for a healthy Brodeur next season as he is showing that he still has game left in him.
