Goaltending Situations: Rick DiPietro & Pascal Leclaire

The National Post is reporting that Rick DiPietro is calling it a season. Complications with his surgically repaired knee is forcing DP to hang up the skates on this dismal season and prepare for the 2009-2010 campaign.

Fantasy Impact
Certainly those who were looking for DP to be an iron horse this season are now up the creek without a paddle. To make matters worse, those DiPietro owners who have Joey MacDonald as an insurance policy are out of luck as he is sidelined for an undisclosed period of time with a groin injury. So now what? Well, there is Yann Danis, who is a serviceable goaltender in this time of fantasy crisis. It is worth mentioning, however, that there are rumors flying around like crazy that Snow is looking to bring in a veteran goaltender to help them through the remaining months of the season. John Grahame, who left the U.S. to play in Russia, is among the names being thrown around. Also, Dany Sabourin (who was placed on waivers today by Edmonton) and Curtis Sanford are of consideration. If you’re in a tight spot, keep a close eye on these 3 players over the next couple of days as a quick reaction could provide some relief.

Usa Today is reporting that Columbus goaltender Pascal Leclaire will miss the rest of the 2008-2009 season because of ankle surgery.

Fantasy Impact
While this year is a wash for Leclaire owners, it should be worth noting that for managers in keeper leagues, it may be wise to hang on to, try to acquire, or pluck him off the waiver wire. With Mason continuing to roll, there really isn’t much reason to keep him in Columbus. He’s still a number one goaltender and there is a strong possibility that he gets dealt in the off-season. Wherever he goes, he’ll be a number one goaltender. The Jackets could get a nice return for a starting goaltender of that caliber, so look for activity over the summer time to make him a number one tender somewhere else. It may be nice to have Leclaire as an option heading into next year; use him or trade him based on your situation.
