Sean Avery Suspended for Off-Ice Remarks
Sean Avery made some disparaging comments alluding to his ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert who is currently dating Flames’ D-man Dion Phaneuf. The NHL has suspended Avery indefinitely pending a hearing. Source: TSN.ca
Seems a bit odd that the NHL is suspending Avery for his most recent comments, especially since it’s an off-ice incident. Honestly, it’s pretty much in line with what Avery’s done all his career. Also, there have no doubt been much, much worse comments on-ice in games than what Avery said. The league deemed his comments “detrimental to the League or game of hockey” at this point.
Fantasy Impact: Obviously, if you have Avery, you are going to have to bench him until he gets back. The Stars and Flames were supposed to play tonight and that is the reason for the timing of Avery’s remarks. It was anticipated by many poolies that there would be some fisticuffs between the teams–especially involving Avery–because of the remarks Avery made earlier this season about Jarome Iginla. Looks like fantasy managers will have to postpone this potential PIM-fest for another time.
