Injury Report: Daniel Briere To Miss 4-5 Weeks
Danny Briere is set to miss another 4-5 weeks at the moment, after his injury the other night, according to the Flyers Blog. They are saying it is a groin strain. Briere has missed significant time already this season with abdominal/groin injuries and also in years past with sports hernia surgery.
Briere had an MRI done and his most recent injury was said to be related to his initial abdominal injury as well. Briere himself said that the injuries are related. This makes sense because the muscles in that area are related. GM Paul Holmgren said it’s a “significant” groin strain and that he’ll be out for maybe 4-5 weeks.
Fantasy Impact: Although I wouldn’t say Briere is necessarily “injury prone” per se, he sure is getting up into that category, at least for this season. In years past when he was with the Coyotes and then later joined the Sabres, Briere actually had a nice iron man streak going where he didn’t miss a single game spanning a stretch of more than a couple seasons. However, in 05-06 he missed significant time with an abdominal injury which he got surgery on after trying to return once. It’s eerily similar to this season’s injury problems for Briere, where he tried to return but couldn’t and now is out again.
Expect Mike Richards to continue to center the #1 line and Jeff Carter to be the #2 pivot. Both Richards and Carter have been quite good in terms of scoring. So although the Flyers will certainly miss Briere, they have been playing the past several weeks without him anyway.
Expect Briere to be put on IR by the Flyers, so don’t worry about having to hold Briere in an active roster spot without being able to grab a replacement. Stash Briere as soon as you get the chance and even when he does return, it may be wise to wait a few games to see how he performs before taking him off IR. The latest updates don’t have him getting surgery, so take that for what it’s worth.
