Fantasy Stock Watch: 12 more buy low players
Here are some more players who haven’t had the hottest start but should get it going in the long run. Try to trade for them now when they’re cheaper and reap the rewards when they start performing to their potential.
1. Derek Roy – Buffalo Sabres
Analysis: Roy’s linemate Vanek is off to a ridiculously hot start, as TV’s leading the league in goals at this point. As for Roy himself, he’s not doing as great. He’s got a few points but is off his pace from last year and certainly can do much better. Look for Roy to get it going very soon and get back to a scoring pace similar to last seasons or even better. If he can really start clicking with Vanek at even strength, they could be a major force this season. Try to acquire Roy soon, before he gets hot, because it’s inevitable that he will.
2. Jason Pominville – Buffalo Sabres
Analysis: Similar to his teammate Roy, Pommer is having a a decent start but not as good as he should be. The last couple games he’s been doing better but overall his pace is a bit off last year’s mark. Pominville has had some trouble sticking with a center, as he doesn’t play on Roy’s line and all the other Sabre centers have gone down with injury and are just now returning. Once the Buffalo pivots start returning and Pominville gets into his groove, he’ll get back to form and should be able to notch around 80 points again by season’s end.
3. Ed Jovanovski – Phoenix Coyotes
Analysis: Jovocop is having a very poor start to the 2008-2009 season. He’s only got 1 goal (just got it a couple days ago) and is a -7 on top of that. He finally had a good run of health last season and was able to put up 51 points, very solid scoring for a D-man. Expect Jovanovski to get back to his old ways sooner or later. It’s likely he can be acquired for VERY cheap and it’s quite possible he may already be out on the waiver wire or free agency by now because of his lack of production. Jovanovski is a great buy right now. Don’t give up too much and if he straightens out, you’ll have won huge in the long run.
4. Jonathan Toews – Chicago Blackhawks
Analysis: Toews is what you would definitely call “snake bitten” at this point. He was last year’s rookie leader in goals with 24, even though he missed a substantial amount of games. So far, 12 games in, he’s got 7 assists but no goals to go along with it. He’s had some bad luck so far. A few games ago, Kane tried to set up Toews for an empty netter so he can get the monkey off his back but the time expired and he was unable to technically get it. He’s had his chances but just isn’t finishing right now. Don’t expect this to continue. Toews has a TON of talent. It’s possible that his new found captaincy responsibilities could be affecting him but it’s unlikely to hamper a player of his caliber for too long. Toews is certainly a good buy low right now if you’re in the market for a really good, young center.
5. Joe Corvo – Carolina Hurricanes
Analysis: Last season after getting traded from Ottawa to Carolina, Corvo was a relative monster offensively for the ‘Canes. He notched 21 points in 23 games to finish out the season, a lot of those points coming on the PP. Corvo’s had a slow start so far so managers who drafted him as their #1 D-man will likely be thoroughly disappointed. Their loss is your gain. Try to get Corvo for cheap as he’s seemingly becoming more comfortable the past couple games and could get it going soon. With Pitkanen being injured, Corvo is the #1 guy again in terms of scoring from the Carolina blue line. If you can make a nice deal and not give up much, Corvo could be a very nice buy for you, even if he doesn’t approach last year’s pace.
6. Jay Bouwmeester – Florida Panthers
Analysis: Jay-Bo is a notoriously slow starter. He usually is a very strong second half performer. If you’re in the market for a solid D-man who is currently underpeforming but who you can utilize for a possible H2H playoff run or something along those lines, then Bouwmeester is a good target. If roto is your game then it may be better to save most of his games for after the all star break. He can most likely be had rather cheaply as he’s only got 3 points in 12 games. Again, he’s a good second half performer so it could take him a several more weeks to really get going so make sure you’ve got the patience for it.
7. Brian Rolston – New Jersey Devils
Analysis: Rolston is currently injured. At the time of this writing, he’s still out for a few more weeks at least. However, if you’re not averse to adding players on injured reserve and it’s allowed in your particular league, a guy like Rolston could be a good player to stash for the short term future. If you’ve got a bench spot or better yet an IR spot to spare, Rolston could be a nice investment for now. Once he comes back, he’ll again be centering NJ’s top line.
8. Daniel Briere – Philadelphia Flyers
Analysis: Like Rolston, Briere is currently on injured reserve. When good players are injured is really the time to trade for them if you’re so inclined. Obviously there are risks to this so make sure you’ve planned it out properly. Briere had 7 points in 6 games before he went down so expect him to continue his point-per-game pace once he returns. Briere could be back within the next week or two.
9. Tomas Kaberle – Toronto Maple Leafs
Analysis: One of the best fantasy defensemen year in and year out, Kaberle isn’t putting up the numbers he’s capable of just yet. The season is only a month in so don’t expect him to string it out too much longer. The surprising Leafs work very hard and are heavily underestimated this season. Kaberle should still be able to put up a decent amount of points again as the season rolls on. If Sundin miraculously re-signs with the Leafs, that would certainly boost his outlook.
10. Sam Gagner – Edmonton Oilers
Analysis: Looks like Gagner is definitely having a touch of the sophomore jinx, at least so far. His production is way off last year’s pace but he’s still got lots of talent. Gagner is still a relatively inexperienced player in the grand scheme of things so expect bumps like this to come and go. It’s unlikely he’ll keep up his current slump for too long, so now is the time to trade for him, when he’s at his very lowest point. Expect a strong second half from him, at the very least. However, the second half is still a ways away so if Gagner does continue his slow start be cognizant of the situation.
11. Jochen Hecht – Buffalo Sabres
Analysis: Another Sabre to possibly buy low on. Hecht is just coming off injury so be wary. Assuming he does remain healthy from here on in, though, Hecht can be a decent depth contributor for many fantasy teams. He’ll be able to chip in around 50 points or so. Guys who are injured or just coming off injury are usually at their lowest price point, if you’re looking to trade for them.
12. Pierre Marc-Bouchard – Minnesota Wild
Analysis: Already off last season’s 63 point pace, PMB is coming off a recent injury and a bit of a slow start overall. It was looking like this was going to be his breakout season after a pretty good campaign last year. It’s still quite possible. Look for him to improve on his production per game as he gets back into the swing of things. He’s an assist machine so if you need some helpers, he can be your man to target in a value type deal.
