Injury Report: Goaltenders, Forwards & Defenders
Here are injuries that may have a significant fantasy impact on rosters in all formats
Daniel Briere - Philadelphia Flyers
Injury: Torn Abdominal Muscle
Fantasy Impact: Just as things were looking up in Philly, they will be without the services of Daniel Briere for up to a month. Briere had 3 goals and 4 assists on the season and saw significant time on the power play. Briere started the season as Philadelphia’s top right winger, but was switched back to his more comfortable center position. Look for Jeff Carter to fill the void on the 2nd line and with 9 points already on the season, look for him to continue to sparkle in Briere’s absence.
Johan Franzen - Detroit Red Wings
Injury: Sprained Left Knee
Fantasy Impact: Franzen will miss about three to four weeks because of the injury. Detroit is a fantasy goldmine and with Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Hossa scattered throughout the first and second lines, anyone getting time with them will certainly benefit from their immense talent. Look for Jiri Hudler to step up with Franzen out and fill the void not only on the 2nd line, but on the power play as well.
Joni Pitkanen - Carolina Hurricanes
Injury: Torn Meniscus
Fantasy Impact: Pitkanen will have surgery next week to repair a torn meniscus in one of his knees and will be sidelined for about a month. He was one of Carolina’s top D-men and saw significant time on the top power play unit to start the season. Throw him on the IR and consider Frantisek Kaberle or Niclas Wallin as replacements. Joe Corvo is probably not available at this point in the season, but if he is, that would be your top choice.
Rick DiPietro - New York Islanders
Injury: Lower Body Injury
Fantasy Impact: Joey MacDonald will continue to take over the starters role in DP’s absence, so adjust your rosters accordingly. Even when DP was playing, he was fairly mediocre, so if you put some goaltending stock in him this year, you may want to consider a trade.
Pascal Leclaire - Columbus Blue Jackets
Injury: Ankle Injury
Fantasy Impact: Leclaire was recently placed on the IR with an ankle injury but the good news is he is only supposed to miss a week or so. We saw last year that even though the Jackets were a weaker squad, Leclaire could definitely be worthwhile to own long term. Stash Leclaire and make a play for Fredrik Norrena and use him as a flyer until Pascal is able to return.
Craig Rivet - Buffalo Sabres
Injury: Arthroscopic Knee Surgery
Fantasy Impact: Rivet will be sidelined for at least 2 weeks after finally addressing a lingering knee issue. Nathan Paetsch will get a chance to play in place of the Sabres new captain but isn’t worth the risk of an add as there are probably better options out there. Jaroslav Spacek and Teppo Numminen should be the most productive point men in Buffalo for the next few weeks. Also, it is worth mentioning that Buffalo’s top player in terms of ice time is Andrej Sekera. Just something to think about.
Pavol Demitra - Vancouver Canucks
Injury: Fractured Cartilage In Ribs
Fantasy Impact: It’s not like we didn’t see something like this one coming. Demitra is somewhat prone to injury and it couldn’t come at a worse time for a team notorious for not scoring goals. Throw him on IR and find a replacement ASAP. He should be on the mend for about a month.
Martin Gerber - Ottawa Senators
Injury: Strained Leg Muscle
Fantasy Impact: If someone has not already pounced on Alex Auld in your league, now may be a good time to do so. Gerber has been super flat coming out of the gate and this injury isn’t helping his case to be the number one tender in Ottawa. Auld is a competent back up who could easily take over the starting job if necessary. Even if Gerber comes back, keep Auld reserved until Ottawa defines a clear starter.
No timetable for return: Jere Lehtinen, Marian Gaborik, Tim Connolly, Steve Sullivan, Bryan McCabe
