Fantasy Stock Watch: Power Play Sleepers
A look at players you may be able to buy low or snag off the waiver wire that are getting some notable power play time.
Scott Cullen of TSN Canada wrote a great article entitled Backchecking: Who’s Getting Power Play Time that details some overlooked power play producers getting ice time with the man advantage. Let’s have a look from a fantasy perspective:
Anaheim:
Player: Ryan Carter
Analysis: Carter is seeing some power play time with the Ducks on the 2nd unit. He is playing with Morrison and Selanne on the 2nd line for now and is probably available in your league, but only consider him in the deepest of leagues for the time being. He’s a center and I can guarantee you that there is a more reliable option ahead of him.
Boston:
Player: Milan Lucic
Analysis: He had a hatter the other night and has taken some serious penalty minutes so far this season. He’s in a tough spot playing behind Savard and Bergeron, but is still a valuable player if he can shuffle back and forth between power play units.
Buffalo:
Player: Clarke MacArthur
Analysis: With injuries to Tim Connolly, Paul Gaustad and Jochen Hecht, the door has been left wide open for MacArthur to step up and take control of that 2nd line. So far so good. Until you see both Hecht and Connolly come back, continue to consider MacArthur an option for your fantasy squad.
Carolina:
Player: Tuomo Ruutu
Analysis: I was kind of surprised when I read that Ruutu is leading all Carolina forwards with power play time, and despite only having 2 points, once he picks his game up, Ruutu can be a dangerous player. He has top line honors right now playing along side Staal and Whitney, so it may be a worthwhile play.
Chicago:
Player: Kris Versteeg
Analysis: He is making an excellent case for himself in Chicago. He’s worked his way up to the power play and has already had a 5 game point streak this season. He’s extremely hot right now and worth serious consideration.
Dallas:
Player: Fabian Brunnstrom
Analysis: He’s a goal scorer. Plain and simple. His opening night hat trick showcased the true talent that this kid is, and once Dallas gets back on track, expect even better production from him. He is only supposed to be filling in for an injured Jere Lehtinen, however, I think he has made his case for a permanent spot on the roster.
Edmonton:
Player: Denis Grebeshkov
Analysis: Despite Souray and Visno anchoring the offensive aspect of the defense in Edmonton, Grebeshkov is making a strong argument for top power play consideration. 2 of his 5 points are on the power play and with as many points as Souray, he is certainly proving that he can handle the point during a man advantage.
Florida:
Player: Keith Ballard
Analysis: With McCabe still on the mend, Ballard will continue to man the Florida power play. He has 8 points and 26 penalty minutes so far this season; fantasy ’stud’ caliber if you will. Continue to play him even if McCabe comes back.
Minnesota:
Player: Antti Miettinen
Analysis: With Gaborik out of the lineup, Miettinen has made his presence felt both even strength and on the power play. Even if Gabby makes a return here shortly, don’t rule out Miettinen remaining on one of the power play units. Also, with all the trade rumors swirling around Gaborik, it would be a big move up for Miettinen if he is dealt. Continue using him even if Gabby returns.
New York Rangers:
Player: Brandon Dubinsky
Analysis: Dubinsky has easily been the best Ranger over the past month and continues to see decent power play time each game. Stick with him if you have him or add him if he’s available. He’s pointing and PIMing all over the place.
Phoenix:
Players: Kyle Turris, Mikkel Boedker and Kevin Porter
Analysis: All 3 are rookies fighting for time with the man advantage and all are capable of putting up big numbers on the power play. Flag all 3 players and see where the next couple of weeks takes them. For now though, if you’re looking to make a play, use the exact order you see above when considering making an add.
San Jose:
Player: Marc-Edouard Vlasic
Analysis: This may be Vlasic’s break out year with San Jose. He has shown excellent offensive instincts over the past couple of seasons and he’s seeing decent power play time right now. Certainly worth a look in deeper leagues and for those in shallower leagues, he certainly merits an add to fill an injury on the back end.
Vancouver:
Player: Alexander Edler
Analysis: Edler appears to be emerging as the Canucks’ power play quarterback so make the add in deeper leagues and use him as a flyer for an injury in shallower leagues.
