There are players out there that not only contribute offensively, but are willing to take a penalty or two along the way as well. Consider these players if your league weighs in heavily on penalty minutes:
Player: Dion Phaneuf
Team: Calgary Flames
Stats: 0g/6a/9pims
Analysis:
Dion is off to a bit of a slow start in his standards, but he will pick it up and is possibly one of the most valuable fantasy players out there. He quarterbacks the Calgary power play and isn’t afraid to drop the gloves either. 150 PIMs and 50+ points is certainly attainable from this all-star defenseman.
Current Sporting News price: 7.15 Million (Pricey)
Player: Shane Doan
Team: Phoenix Coyotes
Stats: 4g/0a/25pims
Analysis:
Captain Canada is an extremely well rounded fantasy option for managers looking for a right winger. He’s on a Phoenix team that is loaded with up and coming talent and joins veteran star Olli Jokinen on the first line. He could really take advantage of the situation he’s in at hit that 70+ point mark this season. As for PIMs, he’s already almost half way to his total from last season and were not even 2 weeks in to the season. He’s not afraid to scrap, so keep him on your radar.
Current Sporting News price: 5.80 Million (Affordable)
Player: Jarome Iginla
Team: Calgary Flames
Stats: 5g/2a/14pims
Analysis:
Iggy is off to a solid start again this year and we should expect similar numbers as last year, especially with the added firepower on offense. We’ve seen him drop the gloves twice this season and it should continue to produce like the fantasy stud he is.
Current Sporting News price: 8.20 Million (Pricey)
Player: Craig Rivet
Team: Buffalo Sabres
Stats: 0g/3a/29pims
Analysis:
Despite Rivet missing the next 2 weeks due to injury, once healthy, he’ll slide right back into the top pairing and will run the power play with Jaroslav Spacek. He’s in a good position in Buffalo to improve on last season’s 35 point effort and should still maintain a respectable PIM mark.
Current Sporting News price: 2.76 Million (Low Buy When Healthy)
Player: Brenden Morrow
Team: Dallas Stars
Stats: 3g/5a/18pims
Analysis:
Morrow is a valuable forward who isn’t afraid to take a few penalties here and there. He’s a top liner in Dallas and should produce quite nicely this season. He’s at the left wing position, which can be thin at times, so have a look.
Current Sporting News price: 6.53 Million (Pricey)
Player: Ryan Getzlaf
Team: Anaheim Ducks
Stats: 0g/1a/17pims
Analysis:
Getzy is off to a slow start this season but once Anaheim heats up, expect him to be front and center collecting points and punishing opponents. He has a bit of a mean streak so if you’re sitting patiently on him right now, continue to do so. It shouldn’t be too much longer.
Current Sporting News price: 6.15 Million (Affordable – Value Dropping)
Player: Dan Boyle
Team: San Jose Sharks
Boyle is in a really good place in San Jose and barring any freak accidents, should produce steadily, especially on the power play. Don’t expect Phaneuf-like PIMs, but he should hover around 65 this season.
Stats: 2g/4a/16pims
Analysis:
Current Sporting News price: 3.09 Million (Value Defender)
Player: Chris Pronger
Team: Anaheim Ducks
Stats: 1g/2a/15pims
Analysis:
We all know that Pronger is a bruiser, so until the Ducks figure out their situation, sit back and let him pummel opponents until the team gets their scoring touch back. Like I said above, it shouldn’t be took much longer.
Current Sporting News price: 4.77 Million (Affordable)
Player: Brandon Dubinsky
Team: New York Rangers
Stats: 3g/6a/15pims
Analysis:
Saucerpass pegged Brandon Dubinsky as a sleeper this year and those of you who read up and were savvy enough to snag him in the later rounds of your draft are certainly reaping the benefits early on this season. He’s pointing and taking penalties, which is exactly what fantasy managers are looking for. You could either sell him off right now, perhaps in a package deal to upgrade a wing or d position, or continue to hold on to him. Either way, it certainly won’t hurt you.
Current Sporting News price: 3.24 Million (Buy Low – Rising Stock)
Player: Mike Richards
Team: Philadelphia Flyers
Stats: 4g/2a/13pims
Analysis:
Philly may not be winning as much as many of us expected so far, but that hasn’t stopped Richards from playing at the top level. He had 4 helpers last night and only has played 2 games thus far where he has not taken a penalty. Once this team starts clicking on all cylinders, you may see Richards’ value take off.
Current Sporting News price: 5.70 Million (Affordable – Buy Now)
Player: Patrick Sharp
Team: Chicago Blackhawks
Stats: 5g/5a/12pims
Analysis:
Sharp flew under the radar in most drafts this year with managers going after players like Kane, Toews, and Havlat, but he has certainly proven to be a valuable asset to the team early on here and is living up his duties on the first line. 50-60 PIMs isn’t out of the question by any stretch of the imagination.
Current Sporting News price: 5.64 Million (Affordable)
Player: Jamie Langenbrunner
Team: New Jersey Devils
Stats: 1g/2a/12pims
Analysis:
I think one of my favorite things in the off-season was when Jamie Langenbrunner said that he wanted to fight more this year. Nothing yet, but still something to keep in mind. He’ll be bounced between the 1st and 2nd line, so he has fantasy value in terms of goals and assists. Let’s just see if he lives up to him tough guy claim.
